Med students more comfortable with electronic record-keeping

Canada’s medical students differ from doctors in at least one way — they are keen to embrace electronic record-keeping when they enter the workforce.

Eighty-two per cent of second-year residents surveyed said they plan to use electronic medical records in their practice, up from 75 per cent in 2007.

The survey found only 39 per cent of doctors now have electronic records on a personal computer or laptop.

The survey also reveals that work-life balance is an important issue for med students and residents, with half saying it’s the most important factor for a satisfying practice.

Almost 5,600 medical students and residents responded to questions as part of the 2010 national physician survey.
