NS Teachers ratify contract with province

Nova Scotia’s public school teachers have accepted a new two-year contract with the province.

The Nova Scotia Teachers Union says 78 per cent of teachers voted 63.3 per cent in favour of the tentative deal. The contract will give teachers a one per cent salary increase in each of the two years of the agreement. The contract will expire on July 31, 2012.

“Both parties worked very hard to reach an agreement that is fair to teachers, allows the province to live within its means and is in the best interest of public education,” said Education Minister Ramona Jennex.

The contract commits the Department of Education and the NSTU to establishing a joint committee to examine a number of workload issues facing teachers.

“Teachers are telling us that these issues must be addressed so they can spend more time improving student learning and less time on paperwork,” said NSTU President Allen.

The previous teachers’ contract expired on July 31, 2010.
