VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC Federation of Labour is supporting the Occupy Vancouver gathering this weekend. The event is happening outside the Art Gallery in downtown Vancouver at noon on Saturday.
Similar events are being planned in communities across the country, following the start of the Occupy Wall Street movement which began several weeks ago. Federation President Jim Sinclair says they are fighting for good jobs, fair taxes, and strong public services.
“I think that’s what’s sweeping the country and people are tired of a system that leaves most of us, the majority, getting poorer and poorer everyday, the middle class disappearing, and of course the wealthy simply getting wealthier and wealthier.”
He calls it a grassroots movement, but isn’t speculating on how big the Vancouver gathering might be.
“I think there’s certainly some imagination that’s been captured by this, a lot of people are angry. But I’ve given up predicting how many people will turn out about 30 years ago.”
The Federation says it will continue to support any peaceful demonstrations that continue after Saturday.
