EDMONTON, AB (NEWS1130) – Ryan Nugent-Hopkins recorded his first career hat-trick but a pair of Sami Salo goals lifted the Vancouver Canucks to a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.
Salo put the Canucks up 1-0 nearly nine minutes into the first period on a powerplay. It was the first time the Canucks opened the scoring so far this season.
The Oilers pulled even less than five minutes later on a powerplay of their own as Nugent-Hopkins took a pass from Jordan Eberle on the edge of the crease and beat Roberto Luongo for just his second career goal.
With time ticking down on the first period, the Burnaby native struck again as Nugent-Hopkins deflected a Tom Gilbert shot into the Canuck goal, putting Edmonton up 2-1 with just 30 seconds to play in the opening frame.
Henrik Sedin tied the game at two just over four minutes into the second period, once again on a powerplay.
With the Oilers back on the powerplay, Nugent-Hopkins put the puck on net and it found away across the line with Taylor Hall and Eberle in the crease, which gave him the hat-trick.
Edmonton appeared to be heading to the second intermission with the 3-2 lead but with just 16 seconds left to play Daniel Sedin centered the puck right on to the stick of Alex Burrows and he made no mistake tipping it in to pull even at three.
Burrows’ late tying marker set the stage for Salo’s game winner which he scored nearly eight minutes into the final frame.
The game marked the end of a four-game road trip for Vancouver. The Canucks will return home to face the New York Rangers on Tuesday.
