TORONTO, Ont. – An offshoot of the Occupy Toronto group, called Occupy Bay Street, held a protest march in the financial district, Monday.
Group members said they would gather at 7 a.m. in the King Street and University Avenue area, but started late.
Employees in the nearby office towers were forewarned about heightened security. Extra security guards were in place in those buildings, but there were also additional police officers on foot, bikes and cars patrolling the financial district.
However, the crowd was small and peaceful.
The Occupy Bay Street group is calling for, “real action and not talk.” The group wrote on its blog, “we respect all of the work of Occupy Toronto, but more needs to be done.”
It also said it wants to send the message to Canada’s financial leaders they want to work with them, not against them.
Meanwhile, Occupy Toronto protestors continue to camp in St. James Park, near Jarvis and King streets. Around 60 tents were set up overnight, and they are expected to head to Ryerson University at around 11 a.m. for a social justice rally.
From Canada to around the world, the “Occupy” movement shows no sign of running out of steam.
In Montreal, Que., demonstrators have pitches dozens of tents in the financial district, while in Vancouver, B.C., protestors have taken over an art gallery downtown.
In New York, it’s day 31 of the Occupy Wall Street and the Occupy Washington movements is growing too.
The Occupy Toronto movement, which began in cities across Canada Saturday, was inspired by the month-long Occupy Wall Street protest south of the border.
