Ottawa announces ACOA job cuts

The federal minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency says 42 jobs will be eliminated as Ottawa seeks ways to trim budgets.

Bernard Valcourt said the agency has identified $15.2 million in savings through cuts and other measures such as reducing travel and hiring fewer consultants.

Jeannie Baldwin, spokesperson for the Public Service Alliance of Canada, says the cuts are the latest in a series of bad news announcements.

“The list gets great,” said Baldwin. “Every time, we’re hearing of 101 positions down in Cape Breton. Now it’s DFO. Now it’s ACOA. I’m not quite sure what it’s going to be tomorrow.”

One hundred employees have been told their jobs could be affected but that only 42 will be cut, including 12 positions in Moncton, two in Nova Scotia and five in Ottawa.

ACOA has about 670 employees across the region and another 30 in Ottawa.

The cuts are part of department-wide reviews as the federal government tries to cut costs and reduce budgets.
