First snowfall of the season expected tonight

The first snowfall of the season is upon us.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement predicting Nova Scotia will receive five centimeters of snow starting Thursday evening and lasting into the morning.
News 95.7 meterologist Richard Zurawski says October 27 is a little early for snow in the Atlantic region.
“I wouldn’t say it’s really early, but in the last few years we haven’t had a snowfall this early,” he said. “Usually it happens a little closer to December.”
A low-pressure system is expected to pass over the south of Nova Scotia, bringing near freezing temperatures overnight.
While inland areas will get snow, areas closer to the coast will get rain or a mix of rain and snow – about 10 to 15 millimeters of rain.
Zurawski says that means a tricky Friday morning commute.
“Probably tomorrow morning it’s going to be greasy going to work,” said Zurawski. “We’re looking at wet snow and rain. Not pleasant weather at all.”
Meanwhile, meteorologists have their eye on Hurricane Rina which currently has peak winds of 115 knots – between a Category 2 and Category 3 storm.
Zurawski says Rina is currently moving around the Caribbean and it will be another few days before any impact on Nova Scotia becomes clear.
