Transit workers could be off work by Christmas: union

The union representing Metro Transit workers is accusing HRM of “fast-tracking” a work stoppage over Christmas.

The city and the union are entering collective-agreement negotiations, but the head of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 508 says the city applied for conciliation after just one meeting.

Ken Wilson tells the Herald it’s reckless and unheard of to try to accelerate the bargaining process before any serious negotiations have taken place.

He wants both sides back at the table, but says the city has refused to withdraw its conciliation application.

HRM spokesperson Shaune Mackinlay says conciliation is a “positive” and “productive” step, not a “fast track” solution.

She says nobody wants to see a work stoppage, and negotiations will continue until the province appoints a conciliator.
