Canucks crush Flames for second straight win

CALGARY, AB (NEWS1130) – Roberto Luongo stopped 28 shots but Alex Tanguay beat him in the final minute of the game. The goal didn’t matter though as the Vancouver Canucks cruised to a 5-1 victory over the Calgary Flames.
The Canucks were just three days removed from an inspiring 7-4 win over the Washington Capitals on Saturday night and followed it up by scoring five times in the first two periods.
Henrik Karlsson replaced Mikka Kiprusoff in the Calgary crease to start the third period after the veteran stopped just 13 of the 18 shots he faced through 40 minutes.
Chris Higgins continued his strong play and opened the scoring when he was sprung on a breakaway by Jannik Hansen. Higgins faked to his forehand and then roofed a backhander over Kiprusoff’s pad to make it 1-0 almost eight minutes into the first period.
After Alex Burrows banged in a rebound on a powerplay to make it 2-0 Daniel Sedin scored with just 18 seconds left in the opening frame on another man advantage. The goal not only gave Vancouver a 3-0 lead but it tied Sedin with Pavel Bure for fourth all-time on the Canucks goal list at 254.
Vancouver didn’t slow down in the second period. Nearly four minutes in Maxime Lapierre made a brilliant cross-ice pass that hit Cody Hodgson right on the tape. All he had to do was tap it in to the empty goal to make it 4-0.
At 11:27 of the second period the Canucks scored their fifth and final goal of the game. Alex Edler added to his two assist with a wrister from the point that hit a Flame defenceman before finding the back of the net.
Luongo appeared to be well on his way to his first shutout of the season when Tanguay drove hard to the net and tipped a pass past the Canuck keeper with just 31 seconds remaining.
The win improves the Canucks record to 9-0-2 in their past 11 games against the Flames and also extends their win streak in Calgary to five games.
Vancouver will now head to Minnesota to take on the Wild in the second of a six game road trip on Thursday evening.
