Veterans remembered with ‘Hero’ class ships

Remembrance Day isn’t until Friday, but a very special ceremony was held at Irving’s Halifax Shipyard Wednesday afternoon to honour nine Canadian heroes who sacrificed their lives for our country.
It was the unveiling of the federal government’s first nine “Hero” class ships that are being built for the Canadian Coast Guard.
“The tribute that we’re making here today is a very personal and very meaningful act of remembrance,” said Minister of National Defense and Regional Minister for Nova Scotia Peter MacKay.
Each ship is named after a veteran who lost his life fighting for our country. One of the vessels carries the name CCGS Private Robertson V.C. Robertson’s great, great, great nephew Laurie Seitz flew in from Medicine Hat, AB for Wednesday’s ceremony.
“It’s a real honour,” Seitz says. “I don’t quite know how to describe it. We’ve had (Robertson’s) pictures in our family for years and we’ve all heard the story. But, to see this much attention drawn to it and that, it’s really incredible.”
The Private Robertson V.C. will be the first of the nine ‘Hero’ class ships to enter service.
