City Hall secrecy concerns Halifax residents

Halifax residents are concerned that yet another secret meeting is being held at City Hall today to discuss the Occupy Nova Scotia movement.

Halifax Regional Councillors are scheduled to start an in-camera session at 4 p.m. before starting its regular public meeting at 6 p.m. today.

“We’re disappointed with secret meetings at council,” Aaron told Maritime Morning, Tuesday. “It’s sad for democracy. It’s sad for the city. It’s good to hear people are frustrated and they are writing their councillors.”

It was at a closed-door meeting last Tuesday when councillors decided to evict protestors from Victoria Park. Police moved in to remove tents on Remembrance Day.

Mayor Peter Kelly has said the reason council is discussing the Occupy matter away from the public eye is because of the legal advice they were given.

That’s not sitting well with residents being kept in the dark.

“He kept talking about the lawyer. ‘We just took the lawyer’s advice. We just do as the lawyer said. We hold our meetings in camera because the lawyer says to even though it’s against the city charter,'” Margaret told the talk show. “Those things have me very concerned.”
