NDP introduces legislation that would settle first contracts in newly unionized workplaces

The Nova Scotia government has introduced legislation aimed at settling initial contracts for workers in unionized workplaces.
Labour Minister Marilyn More says the government wants to make it easier for employers and employees to resolve differences where there is an impasse preventing a first contract.
She says the goal would be to avoid potential strikes and lockouts.
Under the bill, the union and management would have access to a conciliator if talks break down and if an agreement still isn’t reached, they would then apply for an arbitrator.
If arbitration doesn’t work, the province’s Labour Board would have the power to settle the terms of the contract.
Similar legislation has been passed by six other provinces and the federal government.
