With just weeks before the skating oval on the Halifax Common is set to open it still doesn’t have a name.
Emera and Molson Coors have pledged about $1 million combined. Dr. John Gillis with the Save the Oval group says he understands that they need to recognize the businesses who have been so generous.
“Recognition must be done in a very understated, appropriate fashion,” says Gillis. “I’ve used the words that I don’t want a neon city across from my house.”
However callers to Maritime Morning with Jordi Morgan had their own thoughts on the naming.
“Let’s call it the Winter Games Oval, sort of a bit of a legacy and that way you don’t offend anyone,” says caller David.
Caller Stewart had a cheeky suggestion.
“The oval should be named ‘The Money Pit’,” he says. “The way it’s going to eat money down there is going to be ridiculous.”
Council will hear name proposals at a private session with staff in the near future.
