Push to alter BC’s distracted driving laws

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Put down your sandwich, your book and your hairbrush and focus on the road. A BC-based distraction-free driving initiative says this province needs to look to Alberta to improve our driver focus on the road.
Our neighbours to the east have a distracted driving law that is dubbed the toughest in Canada, by going beyond hand-held electronics and cracking down on eating, reading, writing and grooming behind the wheel.
“It gives enforcement the tools to try and curb the behaviour, but without education and awareness what I believe, and what we’re fighting is the changes in behaviour that isn’t taking place,” says Karen Bowman, found of Drop it and Drive.
Distracted driving accounts for six deaths a day in Canada. Bowman says over 2,000 people have been killed on our roads since January 2nd.
Globally, 1.2 million people are killed in crashes anually, and the United Nations estimates that number could increase to 2 million by the year 2020.
