Crosby fans elated over dazzling comeback

Cole Harbour’s hockey hero didn’t pull any punches in his comeback, and residents of his hometown are singing his praises today.

Sidney Crosby scored two goals and had two assists against the New York Islanders in his highly-anticipated return to the ice after 10 months on the sidelines.

More than 18,000 fans packed Consol Energy Centre in Pittsburgh to welcome the Penguins’ captain back to the game, and it seems safe to assume every resident of Cole Harbour caught at least part of the game.

Fans and even people who don’t normally follow hockey tell News 95.7 they had high hopes for Crosby’s return – but they weren’t expecting such an action-packed performance from the star player.

“I was expecting him to make a comeback, but I wasn’t expecting anything to that degree,” said Eastern Passage resident Krista Wheeler. “I thing a lot of people were just hoping for that one goal and when they saw that they were pretty happy. So, for him to go on and get another and two assists was huge.”

Several fans said Crosby had made his hometown and province proud with such a stellar performance.

Before his injury, the 24-year-old was one of the league’s top scorers, with an MVP, an Olympic gold medal and a Stanley Cup to his name.

Supporters like Wallace say with such an outstanding comeback under his belt, they’re expecting even bigger things from the young phenom.

“It’s about time he came back, I’m glad it was early enough he never lost no more time so he’ll still be a contender for the records he should have already,” he said. “Seems like every game he plays he’s getting better every time,” said Wallis. “I guess if he’s 100 per cent, he’s 100 per cent. I’d like to see the same thing next game.”

Two separate blows to the head took Crosby out of the game last season. The first was a shot from the Capitals’ David Steckel on Jan. 1 and then from Tampa Bay’s Victor Hedman on Jan. 5.

One man told News 95.7 he hopes all the attention will lead someone to do more to help players with concussions, or prevent them from happening.
