Still “challenges” in highway plowing: Transportation Minister

Nova Scotia’s Transportation Minister is catching a bit of heat today for the condition of Halifax-area highways during and after Wednesday’s snowstorm.
“Well, I mean, you know, there are some challenges around the area,” said Bill Estabrooks at Province House.
The Transportation Department covers the whole province with hundreds of vehicles out in the first storm of the season. Around here, Estabrooks says he’s generally quite satisfied.
“The 100-series highways were done within the eight-our range of when they were supposed to be,” said Estabrooks. “I know there’s some secondary roads, the Prospect Road for example, still has some challenges. Those are areas where we’re getting in there and doing them now.”
He wouldn’t go as far as saying anyone did a poor job.
“The first snowstorm of the year. We have a few challenges but we’re going to face them,” said Estabrooks. “There’s no doubt that we have some things to learn from this across the province, but generally I’m quite satisfied.”
Estabrooks says he is won’t consider legislating mandatory use of snow tires for public and service vehicles.
“Not interested in legislation that will have to do that,” said Estabrooks. “There’s one province in the country that does it, In Quebec. They have much more severe weather than us.”
