BCCLA files complaint with RCMP watchdog

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC Civil Liberties Association has asked the RCMP watchdog to investigate why it’s taking so long for the police force to resolve complaints.
The independent watchdog says there has been a growing backlog of complaint files in the top cop’s office.
The Commissioner for the RCMP must return his response on each complaint file to the watchdog before it can be settled, at which point the file may be made public. But the watchdog says there are currently 56 outstanding files, which have an average open period of 259 days.
The association filed its own complaint with the watchdog over the delays after learning one of those open files, for the Taser-related in-custody death of a Prince George man, has been held up for two years.
The newly-appointed Commissioner will meet with the watchdog at some point over the next two weeks.
