METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Operation Red Nose usage is up for the first two weekends of December, and it is only expected to get busier. The economy and the province’s impaired driving laws are helping surge the service, which uses volunteers to drive people home after they’ve been drinking.
“Just last weekend alone we did over 1,300 rides [in BC] and in the Metro Vancouver area just under 1,000,” explains Chris Wilson with the organization.
He tells us there has been a 20 per cent increase in riders in the Tri-Cities, adding a lack of transit services in the Fraser Valley is also contributing to the number of calls they receive.
“I think last year, partly to do with the economy, people weren’t going out as much. This year, people are going out more. They aren’t quite as worried… People are just feeling a little more confident,” says Wilson.
