Layoffs start at Bowater Mersey mill

As expected, the Bowater Mersey pulp and paper mill has started to lay off employees, which was part of the agreement to help keep the mill open.

The Chronicle Herald reports about 20 salaried employees, none of them unionized, were laid off Friday.

In November, unionized workers voted 51.7 per cent in favour of concessions that will cut 80 positions and freeze wages.

Jim Peach, acting president of Local 141 of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union tells The Herald 33 workers have taken severance packages.
