Regional councillors have approved funding that will push a couple of major projects forward, including a park-and-ride in Timberlea and cleaning up a Cole Harbour rehab site.
Council has opted for a cheaper deal to acquire land and build a MetroX facility in Timberlea.
Metro Halifax reported staff negotiated with the Canadian National Baptist Convention to buy a 6.5-acre lot in Sheldrake Lake for $100,000, and offered council five options for using the site.
The first option would have been to build a park-and-ride facility at a cost of nearly $600,000. Council voted instead ot build the park-and-ride without a bus loop, saving about $219,000.
The land itself will cost $100,000.
Council also approved another $150,000 to dispose of hazardous materials from the demolition site of the former Halifax County Regional Rehabilitation Centre on Bissett Road in Cole Harbour.
Demolition has been underway for years and it’s already cost $2 million.
City staffers are looking at options for the land once the demolition is finished.
