HRM issues Christmas Eve parking tickets

Three dozen Halifax motorists woke up to unwanted presents from the city on Christmas Eve morning after police ticketed and towed 36 vehicles in violation of the overnight winter parking ban.

The municipal ban came into effect for the first time this season after Friday’s dump of snow left Halifax Regional Municipality covered in a blanket of snow.

“(Motorists) need to listen to any public service announcements,” parking czar Ken Reashor told News 95.7. “They can certainly go in on our website. We’re certainly Twittering and we will work through the media to get out the information.”

HRM makes its official decision each afternoon about whether the overnight winter parking ban will be in effect for that night between the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m.

This is the first year the ban is being decided on a day-by-day basis as HRM tests out more relaxed rules.

Reashor said it’s not safe for motorists to assume that they can park on the roads if there is no snow.

“You really need to check our site and listen for announcements,” he said. “If it’s clear there may be freezing conditions and we may need to be out there salting. So people should always be checking.”

The Chronicle Herald reports the number of vehicles ticketed and towed Saturday are on par with the last snow storm in HRM.
