An intense, fast-moving rain storm is expected to descend on the Maritimes today bringing with it a torrent of rain and wind as many people in Halifax return to work after the Christmas break or brave the malls for Boxing Day deals.
Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Halifax Regional Municipality, Halifax County and Porters Lake, Guysborough County and Cape Breton, which are all expected to be doused with up to 40 millimeters of rain.
“The drive home could be a little dicey,” said News 95.7’s meteorologist Richard Zurawski. “It’s localized flooding. It’s coming down in a hurry. Thirty to 40 mm coming down in six hours is really a lot of rain. It’s the intensity that we’re worried about.”
Zurawski explained it as a rapidly intensifying low-pressure system which will bring lighter rain to the region this morning with strong rains starting this afternoon. The winds are expected to gust between 50 and 80 kilometers per hour with temperatures reaching nine degrees today.
Environment Canada has also issued wind warning for the Suetes, Inverness County, Mabou and northern Cape Breton where winds are expected to get up to 130 k/hour.
The rain will switch to flurries overnight as the temperature drops to minus three degrees.
