Halifax getting ready to ring in the New Year

The fireworks are set to start popping over Grand Parade at the stroke of midnight on Dec. 31, just one of two New Years Eve celebrations happening in Halifax to ring-in 2012.

Along with Halifax Regional Municipality’s usual mix of entertainment outside city hall, there will also be music and fireworks earlier in the evening at the Emera Oval.

“It’s really family oriented. It’s a great time for families to come down,” said HRM spokesperson Katherine VanBuskirk.

The evening’s events will begin at 6 p.m. with a live performance by DJ Dollar, followed by Razzmatazz for Kids at 6:30 p.m. A fireworks display over the Oval is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and live entertainment will continue into the evening. Skaters can enjoy the ice until midnight depending on the weather. You are asked to call Emera Oval Hotline for information at 490-2347 or visit skatehrm.ca.

Entertainment on Grand Parade starts at 9:30 with music by Carleton Stone, The Mellotones and Three Sheet. Fireworks start at midnight. HRM has an event hotline for event updates: 490-6776.

Metro Transit is offering its free designated driver service for party goers throughout metro from 8:30 p.m. until after midnight.

“You don’t have to worry if you’re going out to a party. You know you can rely on free service to get you home,” said spokesperson Lori Patterson. She encourages people to visit their website or call ahead as each bus will end its service at a different time. The HRM call centre can be reached at 490-4000.

Operation Red Nose volunteers will also be driving people home, in their own vehicles, free of charge. For a free ride call 481-7433.
