Judge gives NS SPCA control over Sydney branch

A judge has given the Nova Scotia SPCA temporary control of the Sydney animal shelter.

Nova Scotia Supreme Court Justice Patrick Murray ruled in favour of the agency’s request for an injunction on Thursday.

Staff and volunteers with the provincial SPCA testified over five days that they had ongoing concerns over the neglect of animals and a lack of veterinary care at the shelter.

Kristen Williams, director of the provincial SPCA, said lawyers are now discussing how the handover will take place.

The provincial organization voted in November to dissolve its Cape Breton branch, but workers refused to leave, and changed the shelter’s name to the Cape Breton Humane Society.

Both sides will head back to court again to argue over who will get permanent control of the Sydney shelter.
