Name change for Cornwallis Jr. High made official

Cornwallis Junior High has officially been renamed.

The Halifax Regional School Board voted Wednesday evening to accept the suggestion of “Halifax Central Junior High,” proposed by the school advisory council.

The board’s Mi’kMaq member suggested renaming the school last year, saying it’s offensive to name a public insitution after a man who approved a scalp bounty on Mi’kMaqs in the 1700s.

Metro Halifax reports one group attended last night’s meeting to oppose the new moniker.

The group, which included former NDP leader Alexa McDonough, suggested naming the school after noted pacifist Muriel Duckworth.
