The strike by unionized Metro Transit workers is showing very few signs of slowing and drivers, who would otherwise be shuttling passengers around the city on buses, are learning to cope with a new routine on the picket line.
One driver, Roger, tells News 95.7, many people don’t realize that it’s stressful being on strike.
“They think it’s all fun and games and this is not fun, I’ll tell you,” he says. “Today is a decent day and stuff, but it’s not fun. Really, we’re not here for the fun of it, we’re not here because we want to be, we’re here because we have to be.”
Another driver, Ricky, says it’s harder to get up in the morning, knowing he’s heading to a picket line, instead of the driver’s seat.
“I’m here because I have to be, not because I want to be. I’d rather be driving my bus up and down the street, laughing and joking with my passengers, but unfortunately, that’s not the way it is.”
He adds that he hasn’t felt the financial pinch yet, but his bills will come due next week. He adds people may not realize workers are not getting paid to walk the picket lines.
