A Maritime philanthropist has made another major donation to a Halifax university.
Mount Saint Vincent University has announced it has received a $2.25 million donation from Margaret McCain, the widow of entrepreneur Wallace McCain, to help fund the construction of a new research centre.
The Margaret McCain Centre for Teaching, Learning and Research will be a five-story, $12 million building.
Dr. Ramona Lumpkin, the university’s President and Vice-Chancellor, says McCain’s gift represents the largest single contribution to the project, as well as the biggest donation the school has ever received.
She says many features of the building will be devoted to honouring women.
“One centrepiece of the building will be an installation in the atrium that will honour 12 inspiring women through artistic installations that will be weavings of the portraits of these women,” she said. “In the front of the building we’re also going to build a women’s wall of honour. We’re looking to honour over 2,000 women from our everyday lives.”
This donation comes three months after McCain’s $8 million contribution to Dalhousie University’s new Wallace McCain Learning Commons.
Wallace McCain, Margaret’s late husband, was the co-founder of McCain Foods, a company now worth more than $2.3 billion. Before his death in May last year, he was considered the 13th wealthiest Canadian by Forbes Magazine.
