HRM residents consider citizens transit group

The Ecology Action Centre in Halifax is looking into the feasibility of a citizens group to advocate for transit users.

Citizens’ groups exist in cities across Canada and in the U.S., working towards a variety of goals.

EAC volunteer Jonathan Arnold tells the Herald the Bus Riders Union in Los Angeles helped achieve a nine-year fare freeze, and in Vancouver, a similar committee helped launch all-night bus service.

About a dozen people met at the Bloomfield Centre last night to look at the options for a similar group in Halifax. The participants discussed everything from greater transparency about public complaints to ongoing conflicts like bringing strollers on buses.

Arnold says the EAC hosted the meeting, but the transit users group could be independent once formed.
