Police re-arrest courthouse escapee

Halifax Regional Police scoured parts of Dartmouth for a man who escaped from sheriff’s deputies at the Dartmouth courthouse this morning, eventually bringing him back into custody.
The Nova Scotia Department of Justice says Thomas Arnold Jones, 48, was to be sentenced today on a break and enter charge. Existing charges include assault, break & enter, arson & uttering threats from 2011.
Cst. Brian Palmeter tells News 95.7 the man bolted from a transport van at provincial court on Pleasant Street and headed into the Mount Hope area on foot.
“At approximately 1:30 p.m., the man contacted police and arranged to turn himself in,” said Palmeter. “He was arrested without incident on Marilyn Drive in Dartmouth and transported to Dartmouth Provincial Court.”
The man faces new charges of escaping lawful custody and property damage. Police say he damaged the van getting out.
