Inmate escaped through van window: Jusice Minister

Nova Scotia’s justice minister says a man who escaped from a moving sheriff’s van pushed out a window that staff had previously flagged as a potential weak point in security.
Ross Landry says the window was part of a cell intended to house the prisoner within the van.
He says his department is investigating how the man was able to leave the van Wednesday and spend about four hours on the loose before turning himself in to police.
Landry says the Justice Department had contracted out work to install bars on the window prior to man’s escape.
He says staff brought the security flaw to his attention within the past year.
He says the man was wearing leg shackles while in the van, but declined comment on whether the inmate was handcuffed as required, adding that he would await the results of the investigation.
Thomas Arnold Jones, 48, is charged with escaping lawful custody and property damage.
