NS domestic violence court gets first coordinator

The Nova Scotia government has appointed a co-ordinator to lead the province’s first domestic violence court.
Valerie Jewkes will oversee the court when it begins hearing cases this spring.
The province has spent $1 million developing the court, which will be launched as a pilot program in Sydney.
With an $800,000 annual budget, the court’s goal is to stop the cycle of domestic abuse and make life better for victims and their families.
Jewkes currently serves as acting court administrator with the family division of Nova Scotia Supreme Court.
In her new role, she will act as a liaison between the judiciary, the Public Prosecution Service, Legal Aid, private lawyers, community-based services and people affected by domestic violence.
