Nova Scotia bracing for fast, furious snowfall

The latest blast of winter is expected to blanket Nova Scotia with a lot of snow in a short time frame.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for most of the northern parts of the mainland, calling for 15 to 20 centimeters of snow in a 12-hour period starting Monday evening.

A low-pressure system over the Great Lakes will track eastward today and cross the Gulf of Maine overnight. Environment Canada meteorologist Jason Sheppard tells News 95.7, areas south of the storm’s track – including Halifax – will see the snow change over to rain and then back to flurries.

“In the city we’ll see the snow develop tonight,” he said. “Mid-morning tomorrow the snow will probably mix with rain or change straight over to rain just along the coast line. We’ll probably get anywhere from two to five millimeters of rain as temperatures rise up to plus two tomorrow morning.”

Metro and Cape Breton can expect about 10 cm of snow, though the warning suggests the snowfall will be “higher than anticipated.”

Winds will also strengthen from the northeast Tuesday afternoon, meaning localized blowing snow.
