Late-winter snowfall blasts Maritimes

Some kids are getting a snow day today!
Schools across Nova Scotia have closed for the day in the wake of an overnight snow storm.

Environment Canada has a snowfall warning in effect for most of the province’s northeastern mainland, calling for a total snowfall of 15 cm in some places as a low pressure system passes over.
News 95.7 meterologist Richard Zurawski says here in metro, we can expect less than that.
“It’s very light snow, the temperature’s rising and everything’s going to switch over to rain before switching back to snow this afternoon,” he said. “The total today will be maybe five centimetres of snow, which is, as you know, about two inches.”
Rising temperatures through the morning meant some drivers around metro found road conditions a bit challenging.
Halifax Regional Police Staff Sgt. Reid McCoombs says officers have responded to one crash today, and they’re anticipating many more.
“Usually when we get this weather, we do see an increase in the car accidents, especially during the morning and supper time commute,” he said. “So just slow down, leave some space between you and the car in front of you. Obviously, with the transit strike, traffic’s a little heavier than normal, so just slow down, be patient, and give yourself lots of room.”
There have been no power outages reported in connection with the wintry weather, and there are just a few delays reported at Halifax Stanfield International Airport.
