Binding arbitration not an option: mayor

Regional councillors will get an update on the transit strike tomorrow, and although a couple have said they’re open to talking about binding arbitration – the mayor says it won’t happen.
Councillors Jackie Barkhouse and Dawn Sloane both said over the weekend they’re uneasy about the lack of movement in negotiations, and would consider binding arbitration to end the strike.
But Mayor Peter Kelly tells Metro Halifax binding arbitration is too risky for taxpayers, and council has made it clear it’s committed to resolving the labour dispute at the bargaining table.
The Amalgamated Transit Union rejected a final offer from the city on Friday and there are no new talks scheduled between the two sides.
