Stadium debate waits, timeline gets tighter

Council didn’t talk about was the stadium at this week’s council meeting.
Instead, it will be discussed next week when a staff report is ready.
That will leave only four days between the next council meeting and the deadline to make a bid for FIFA Women’s World Cup games.
News 95.7 asked Councilor Darren Fisher about the prospects of a stadium.
“It’s not good,” he says “I’d love to have all the time in the world but we don’t, so I’ll be interested in hearing what staff have to say on the 27th.”
Mary wile says she’s counting on staff.
“I hope that they’ll be able to put something together quickly and then we can decide what we’ll do,” she says.
Bob Harvey says the fact that they’ve left it this late, means the FIFA bid is on thin ice.
“I’m not anticipating what’s in the report, I don’t know, I haven’t seen it, no one has talked to me about it,” he explains. “My sense is that FIFA is going to be bridge too far, but we’re going to keep the stadium project alive with all this good information we’ve gathered and work towards a deadline in the future.
But mayor Peter Kelly says there would be enough time to make a bid, if council makes a decision next Tuesday.
“If council makes a decision by next week, I understand with can meet the FIFA timeframes,” says Kelly.
He adds the city has met with the other levels of government about funding.
