Winter weather blasts Maritimes

It looks more like Christmas morning instead of Easter morning through much of the Maritimes.
A blast of winter weather hit us in our sleep, making for a slow drive – especially if you were unfortunate enough to take your snow tires of with all the warm weather in March.
Meteorologist Richard Zurawski says upwards of ten centimeters fell in parts of Nova Scotia, with even more snow in New Brunswick.
“The key is that the system tracked south of the Maritimes and it’s a fairly large low pressure system,” explains Zurawski. “When it tracks south, we wind up getting the cold air from the north. If it happened to track to the north it would draw in all the warm air that comes up from the Gulf of Mexico.”
He says there was a lot of moisture in the system and given it’s track, we got snow instead of rain.
Zurawski explains storms like this happen all the time in May, and he adds it has been unusually dry and mild recently.
“This puts us a bit back to normal but by the time we’re looking at Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday temperatures are back into the teens so this snow is just a blip, it’s not going to last long at all,” he says.
What is unusual, he says, is the degree of swing going from temperatures in the mid 20’s to several centimeters of snow.
