Staff not safe as school board considers budget cuts

The chair of the Halifax Regional School Board says all options are on the table when it comes to meeting budget targets.

The province has asked boards to cut budgets by three per cent. Last week, the Chignecto Central school board responded by eliminating 41 librarian positions.

Halifax board chair Irvine Carvery tells Metro he doesn’t envy the Chignecto board, but says the challenge is the same across the province – and there’s no way to meet the budget targets without affecting staff.

The Halifax board is looking for $10 million in savings. The finance department will present a report on the options at a closed-door meeting next week.
