Province invests in land protection

It’s Earth Day and as people across the country plant trees, clean up beaches and even attend fairs, the Nova Scotia government is announcing its renewing its partnership with land protection organizations.
Environment minister Sterling Belliveau and natural resources minister Charlie Parker have announced an investment of up to $1.5-million over three years.
The hope is that through the partnerships with The Nova Scotia Nature Trust and The Nature Conservancy of Canada, up to $3-million worth of land will be protected.
Andrew Holland with The Nature Conservancy of Canada tells News 95.7 its group will be getting $300,000 a year over the next three years, subject to budgetary approval in the legislature.
“It means you’re going to be seeing more natural areas in your communities protected, whether it’s wetlands forest or coastal areas,” he explains.
It’s part of the province’s goal of legally protecting 12 per cent of the province’s lands by 2015.
As of January 1, Nova Scotia had protected 8.8 per cent of its land.
