HRSB cuts will effect support staff

The cuts to the Halifax regional school board announced this week will hit not just teachers but also their support staff.

The union representing instructional support staff said the board is cutting four educational program assistants and the equivalent of eight full-time library support specialists.

The union says the behavioral team cuts come as enrollment of special needs students is on the rise, while the library staff cuts will be achieved through reduced hours for 27 workers.

The president of the union says the cuts will have a direct impact on students’ learning.
