HRM brings in gun violence expert for workshop

Community leaders and police in HRM have brought in a group called Ceasefire Chicago for a 3-day workshop to look at new ways to diminish shootings in the city.
The Chicago based organization has been successful in improving gun violence in many cities.
The workshop is being called a ‘Knowledge Exchange Program’. CeaseFire Chicago will discuss possible solutions to violence in the city and from there Halifax Regional Police and community leaders will decide if they want to invest in the program.
Constable Brian Palmeter says gun violence affects everyone.
“When you think of addressing violence people turn to the police and this is really a community lead initiative that the police are there to support,” he says.
Police Deputy Chief Bill Moore says there is still going to be crime in HRM, but if this approach helps to reduce the number of shootings, then it would be positive for our city.
“This is about targeting shootings and targeting homicides and violent crime, so if we can see reduction in those then I think it’s a win,” says Moore.
The city has not yet confirmed an agreement with CeaseFire Chicago, when the workshop is over they will discuss whether or not to go ahead with the initiative.
