Halifax man collapses, dies during Cabot Trail relay

The 25th annual Cabot Trail Relay Race ended in tragedy when a runner died on the final leg.

The man collapsed about 500 metres from the finish line around 10:30 Sunday morning and was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The 58-year-old was reportedly a member of the Salt Marsh Trail Running Club, based in Cole Harbour.

RCMP Sgt. Brigdit Leger tells Metro the death is not considered suspicious, and because it involves a “health issue,” no details will be provided.

Race chair Dave Parkinson says RCMP and St. John Ambulance volunteers are present throughout the course, and it’s the first time anything this serious has ever happened.
