Halifax Water gets green light for rate increase

Water rates are going up in HRM – but by how much remains to be seen.

The UARB has authorized Halifax Water to increase its rates for householders and businesses – but the amount won’t be set until the utility completes a “compliance filing.”

The increases applied for ranged from 3.2 to 13.1 per cent for the 2012-2013 fiscal year, but a board official tells the Herald, Halifax Water will get approval for less.

In 2010, the board approved a 29 per cent hike for residential customers.

The next round of increases could take effect as early as July.
