With stats showing most of the assaults on the Halifax peninsula happen downtown, in and around the bars, with alcohol involved, police are refocusing their efforts as part of a Downtown Safety Strategy.
Constable Brian Palmeter says they’ll be taking a different approach toward people who get in fights, including pressing public disturbance charges, even if neither of the combatants is interested in making a complaint.
“We’ve basically allowed this culture of violence to be almost permitted because nothing’s been done about it,” said Cst. Palmeter. “So even in cases where people aren’t injured, they don’t want anything done, we’re going to pursue Causing Disturbance charges. Because what we really want is this culture of acceptable violence in and around the downtown, and anywhere in HRM, to be over.”
Police will also be enforcing vehicle infractions such as impaired driving, failing to yieled to pedestrians. They’ll be keeping a closer eye on those pedestrians, too, to make sure they cross at the right places.
