Biosolids to be used for energy generation

Halifax Water has a plan to generate energy – and make a little money – from the much-debated biosolids.
The use of treated human waste as fertilizer has been a touchy subject in HRM over the last couple of years – and now the utility is planning to use it to generate energy that will be sold to Nova Scotia Power.
The plan is laid out in a report going to HRM’s environment committee today, but Halifax Water spokesperson James Campbell tells Metro Halifax it probably won’t get off the ground for a few years.
It involves tripling the capacity of the processing plant near the airport and using about 20 per cent of the biosolid energy to power the facility.
The rest will be sold to Nova Scotia Power for 17.5 cents per kilowatt hour.
The plan requires approval from Halifax Water’s board of directors and the Utility and Review Board.
