Former Citadel Hotel site to get $60 million development

There’s a new vision for one corner of downtown Halifax that does not include the former Citadel Hotel.

Silverbirch Hotels and Resorts announced Thursday it has partnered with Hilton Worldwide to build a $60 million hotel complex at the corner of Brunswick and Cogswell Streets.

“This will frame a gateway coming into downtown. So when you’re coming into downtown, and you’re looking, and say ‘where’s the entrance to downtown Halifax?’ You’re looking at this corner,” Silverbirch president and CEO Steven Giblins told News 95.7.

The development includes the construction of two hotels, the Hampton Inn with 185 rooms and the Homewood Suites with 135 rooms. There will also be an apartment tower with 145 units, a restaurant, a 9,000-square-foot convention centre and retail shops at street level.

Giblins said the development means a bigger investment in the downtown and in job creation.

Citadel Hotel closed early in 2012 with the plan that it would be renovated and reopened the same year. Today the site is fenced off and construction equipment is tearing the building down.

“When we said goodbye to many of our long-time employees, and I was able to shake their hands and thank them for their many years of service, many of them said ‘we’ll be back,'” said Giblins. “And, so hopefully they will be back.”

He said the hotels alone will be employing about 100 people.
