Hurlburt to be sentenced today

A former provincial cabinet minister who pleaded guilty to charges laid in the province’s spending scandal will be sentenced in a Yarmouth court today.
Richard Hurlburt, a former Progressive Conservative MLA for Yarmouth, pleaded guilty in April to breach of trust and fraud after he spent public money on a generator and big screen television.
Four politicians were charged in the spending scandal, Hurlburt is the second to plead guilty. Independent (former NDP) member Trevor Zinck and former Liberal Russell MacKinnon also face charges related to the scandal.
In April former Liberal Dave Wilson was sentenced to nine months in jail after pleading guilty to using $61,000 of public money to feed a gambling addiction.
“I think you will find that Hurlburt will serve some jail time but perhaps more in the 90 day range I would think than the nine month range,” says columnist Stephen Kimber.
“I think that in a case like this where you have a public official perhaps you do want to hold them to to a higher standard, perhaps you do want to send a message by sending someone to jail”
