Police fire Taser during dustup with suspected drunk driver

Halifax Regional Police officers tried to use a Taser during an arrest in a Quinpool Road parking lot – but the stun gun wasn’t any help, leading to a scrap between officers and a suspect.

Police got a call about a suspected drunk driver around 9:30 p.m. Monday, and located the suspect vehicle in the Atlantic Superstore parking lot.

“They approached the vehicle. The lone male exited the vehicle and charged at the officers in an attempt to assault them,” Staff Sgt. Reid McCoombs told News 95.7.

McCoombs said officers deployed a Taser, but it didn’t help.

“It didn’t misfire, it appears one of the two prongs didn’t hit the suspect,” he said.

Both prongs must make contact to complete the electrical circuit.

The fight continued but the suspect was eventually subdued and taken into custody. He was treated in hospital for a cut to the head.

The officers received minor bruises and scrapes.

A 26-year-old man has been charged with impaired driving, resisting arrest and assaulting police officers. He is currently in police custody and will be in a Halifax court this morning.
