Council votes to disclose $100k salaries

Residents of HRM will soon know how much top-level municipal employees make.
Councillors voted Tuesday to have HRM designated as a public sector body under a new provincial law that requires public-sector bodies to release the salaries of anyone whose salary is $100,000 or higher.
Coun. Jackie Barkhouse, who tabled the motion, tells the Herald she wanted the threshold lowered, but agreed to the $100,000 threshold to ensure the motion would be approved.
Council could have asked employees for permission to publish their salaries, but by having this designation it becomes mandatory.
