IWK: Bring your own diapers

Parents are being asked to bring their own diapers to the IWK Health Centre as of Sept. 1, as the children’s hospital enacts its latest cost-cutting measure.
Vice president of patient care, Jocelyn Vine, says they understand the move will probably upset the public but with belt-tightening across the province’s District Health Authorities the hospital is looking at ways of reducing its costs without affecting patient care.
Vine defended the move to Metro Halifax, saying it’s done in other sectors.
However the “bring-your-own” policy is optional, more of a request than an insistence.
Hospital management said it understands some families won’t be able to grab diapers before dashing to the hospital, while others can’t afford the expense.
The IWK spends about $60,000 a year on diapers as approximately 4,000 babies are born at the hospital annually.
