Outgoing Halifax mayor gets poor grade

With less than a month before the Halifax Regional Municipal election, residents seem to be ready to replace the outgoing mayor based on survey results released today.

The 2012 City Matters survey finds residents are giving Mayor Peter Kelly a 5.7 grade out of 10.

After 27 years of political life, Kelly is not reoffering in the October election. His political career is ending following several scandals, including the cash for concerts debacle, the Occupy Nova Scotia eviction last Nov. 11, and his alleged bungling while acting as executor of the estate of a friend.

The survey is one of many being completed by MQO Research for Metro Halifax and the Greater Halifax Partnership.

This latest survey comes after a series on downtown Halifax safety, in which it was concluded most people feel safe downtown.

However, Metro Halifax reporter Ruth Davenport told the Rick Howe Show Monday, the survey results weren’t the same when respondents were asked about walking in the downtown at night.

“We did see this discrepancy between men and women,” she said. “A lot of women, apparently, according to these responses, just wouldn’t walk alone at night – anywhere at night – after dark.”

She said that’s the expected response from residents in any city in the world.
